WiFi Standards are the technologies that let devices connect to the internet without wires. These standards get better over time to make internet faster, more reliable, and able to handle more devices at once. Each version is identified by a number (like WiFi 6 or WiFi 7) and brings better performance, which means faster downloads, smoother streaming, and stronger connections throughout your home.
When a device connects, it checks which standards the gateway supports and picks the best option for speed and performance.
Types of WiFi Standards
Here’s a quick look at the most common WiFi Standards:
WiFi 4 (802.11n) — Came out in 2009. It was the first to use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, giving good speeds and range.
WiFi 5 (802.11ac) — Released in 2014. It improved speed and performance, especially on the 5 GHz band.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) — Came out in 2019. It’s faster, handles more devices at once, and is great for busy homes with lots of streaming and smart devices. It also supports smart home devices by saving their battery life and uses the newest security features to protect your network.
WiFi 6E — An upgraded version of WiFi 6 that adds a new 6 GHz band. This means:
- More bandwidth for devices so the network doesn’t get crowded.
- Better support for things like 4K video, virtual reality (VR), and video calls.
WiFi 7 (802.11be) — The newest standard. It’s still emerging and promises ultra-fast speeds and low latency for future tech like augmented reality (AR)/VR and 8K streaming. It offers:
- Blazing fast speeds for downloading and streaming.
- Better performance for many devices at once, like smart TVs, phones, laptops, and gaming consoles.
- Lower latency means faster response times for things like online gaming, video conferencing, and VR.
In general, the newer the standard, the better the speed and performance. For example, in the 802.11 group (a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be), “ac” is the oldest supported by Xfinity Gateways and “be” is the newest and fastest.
