Learn the differences between a TV Box and a TV Adapter. As of January 2025, Xfinity no longer gives out TV Adapters. Instead, customers get X1 TV Boxes, including Xfinity Communities customers.
What is a TV Box?
A TV Box (also called a digital cable box or receiver) processes digital-quality signals. It lets you use Xfinity’s on-screen guide to see channel listings, show details, search tools, and parental controls. You can also watch Xfinity On Demand and pay per view (PPV) programs.

What is a TV Adapter?
A TV Adapter is a small device that lets you watch channels from an all-digital cable network on an analog TV. It uses coaxial cables only, so you won’t be able to access premium channels (like HBO Max, Showtime, or Starz), PPV, or Xfinity On Demand.
Even if your TV has a built-in guide, you’ll need to use the TV Adapter remote to change channels. You also won’t be able to use your TV’s picture-in-picture feature.
TV Adapters are no longer available through Xfinity or for Xfinity Communities customers. If you want more features and a better experience, consider upgrading to an X1 TV Box. If you need a replacement for any reason, you need to upgrade to an X1 TV Box.
