Change your WiFi network name and password with the Xfinity WiFi Gateway Admin Tool

Setting your own network name and password helps protect your home network from outside users, viruses, and other threats. If you leave your wireless network unprotected, other people can:

  • Use your internet connection.
  • Access files on your computers.
  • Find out private information like passwords and credit card numbers.

The Xfinity app puts you in the driver’s seat, letting you personalize and control your WiFi experience. The quickest way to view and/or change your WiFi network name and password is to use the WiFi Details feature in the Xfinity app. To learn more, visit View and change your network name and password in the Xfinity app.

Only customers with a rented Xfinity WiFi Gateway XB2 or XB3 can use the Admin Tool (http://10.0.0.1) to manage these WiFi settings.

If you have Xfinity WiFi Extenders on your home network or you have an Xfinity WiFi Gateway XB6 or higher, you can only change your network name and password in the Xfinity app.

Note: You may also see your network name referred to as an "SSID" and your password as a "Network Key."

If you don’t need instructions, go directly to the Admin Tool.

Log in to the Admin Tool

  1. With a laptop, phone, or tablet that’s connected to your network, open a web browser and go to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Then, click LOGIN.

    • Note: Depending on which gateway you have, your screen might not look exactly like this.
      • However, the steps are the same, so you can still follow along.
  3. When you log in for the first time or log in after a device reset, you will be asked to set up a new ID and password for the Admin Tool.
  4. Click Change Password at the top right.

  5. Enter a new password. Make sure it has:
    • At least eight characters.
    • Both uppercase and lowercase letters.
    • At least one number.
  6. Type your new password again in the Re-enter New Password field. Then, click SAVE.

Change your WiFi network name (SSID) and password

Connect your laptop, phone, or tablet directly to your gateway with hard-wired/Ethernet cable or connect wirelessly to your in-home WiFi network (not the "xfinitywifi" network).

If you haven't changed your WiFi network name (SSID) and/or password before, look for the default network name and password on the label on the side or bottom of your wireless gateway:

Then, if you want to change it:

  1. Log in to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Go to the left-hand menu, and pick Gateway, then Connection, and then Wi-Fi.

  3. Under Private Wi-Fi Network, you'll see the Name (SSID) of your WiFi network. Make a note of it.
  4. To see your network password, check the box next to Show Network Password and make a note of it.
    • To change your WiFi network information, type in the Network Name and/or Network Password field and click SAVE SETTINGS.
Screenshot of the Manage your WiFi network settings page with the Network Password displayed.
  5. All set! Now that you have your WiFi network name and password, you can connect your phone, laptop, tablet and any other device to your network.
    • You'll need to sign back into your WiFi network on each device with your new network name and password.

Tips to reset your gateway

You can reset your gateway to its factory default settings if you don't remember your network name and password and can't get into the Admin Tool.

Note: You should only do this if all the other options haven't worked.

Here's how:

  1. Unplug your gateway's power.
  2. Press and hold the Reset button using a pen or an unfolded paperclip to push the recessed button on the back panel of the gateway for at least 15 seconds and then release it.
  3. Plug the gateway back in.
  4. Hold the button for another 30 seconds.
  5. Wait for your gateway to restart.
  6. Log in with the password on your gateway's label.
  7. Change your name and password to something easy to remember.

Any devices connected to the WiFi (laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) will be disconnected. When you’re done, reconnect to your WiFi and enter your new network name and password.

If you own your own modem, you can go to the manufacturer’s website for more specific information on your device.
