Xfinity Gateways give you strong WiFi, fast internet, and easy control of your home network. Older models use two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). The newest model (XB8) adds a third band (6 GHz) with WiFi 6E for even faster speeds. To learn more, see Overview of Xfinity Gateways.
In the past, people used different WiFi names and passwords for each band. You had to pick which one your device should use, and it wasn’t always clear which was best. Now, Xfinity Gateways use band steering. When you use the same WiFi name and password for all bands, the gateway picks the best one for your device.
Why it matters:
- 2.4 GHz: Best range, but slower and more crowded
- 5 GHz: Faster, less crowded, shorter range
- 6 GHz: Fastest, least crowded, shortest range
Tip: Use one WiFi name and password for all bands to get the best connection automatically. WiFi Extenders only work if all bands use the same WiFi name and password.

Why do I only see one WiFi name now?
If your 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands all use the same WiFi name and password, your device will only show one network. Don’t worry — all bands are still working in the background to give you the best connection.
What should I do?
If your bands still have different names or passwords, update them to match.
How to do it:
- Open the Xfinity app.
- Go to the WiFi tab.
- Tap WiFi details.
- Tap Edit WiFi settings.

What is band steering?
Band steering means your gateway picks the best WiFi band (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz band) for your device. It switches automatically based on signal strength and traffic — no need to guess or switch manually.
To use band steering, all bands must share the same WiFi name and password.
What happens if my bands have different names and passwords?
You’ll lose the benefits of band steering. You’ll have to choose bands manually, which can cause slower or dropped connections.
Example: If your phone is on 5 GHz and moves too far away, it might disconnect. With band steering, it would switch to 2.4 GHz automatically.
