Changing advanced WiFi settings in the Xfinity app

This article provides an overview of the network settings and advanced settings that can be managed from the Xfinity app.

Xfinity app WiFi settings overview

To access network settings from the Xfinity app:

1. Sign in to the Xfinity app using the Primary, Manager, or Member’s Xfinity ID and password.
2. Select WiFi from the navigation at the bottom of the screen.
3. Select WiFi details.
4. Select Edit WiFi settings from the pop-up card to edit your WiFi name and password, change security settings and choose whether you hide or broadcast your WiFi name.
5. Once finished, select Save.

You also have the option to set a different WiFi name and password for the radio bands that are broadcast by your Xfinity Gateway (e.g., 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz, depending on model).
If you don't see that option, that means you either:

• Have Xfinity WiFi Extenders on your network, or
• Your advanced WiFi settings are being managed automatically.

Best practices

Using the same name and password for all radio bands is the better setup as it allows your Xfinity Gateway to sort out which band will provide a better connection at any given time. Learn more about the benefits of using one WiFi name and password for your network.

Hide WiFi

If you uncheck the Broadcast WiFi Name box, this will hide your WiFi name from devices that aren't already connected to your home network. Users of these devices will have to manually type in the WiFi name to connect. If you've installed Xfinity WiFi Extenders, the option to split your bands and set your security mode to open will be disabled.

Advanced security

Customers who rent a compatible Xfinity Gateway will have access to Advanced Security, a smarter, more personalized security solution for the home network. Advanced Security gives you added peace of mind for your home network by:

• Preventing you from inadvertently visiting malicious sites or downloading dangerous files.
• Blocking remote access to your smart devices from unknown or dangerous sources.
• Monitoring devices in real-time.
• Alerting you when devices are behaving in unusual ways that could indicate a threat against your home network.
• Adapting and getting smarter over time to keep up with new threats.

Protected browsing

• Customers who rent a Cisco DPC3939 Gateway can enable Protected Browsing.
  • This is an opt-in service that can reduce the risk of accessing known sources of malware, spyware, and phishing for all devices connected to your home network.
• If you have access to Advanced Security, you'll see a link to a dashboard that replaces the Protected Browsing setting.
  • Protected browsing is part of the Advanced Security feature.

Network devices

View the online/offline connection status for your gateway. If you've purchased and activated any Xfinity WiFi Extenders, you'll also see the online/offline status for those Xfinity WiFi Extenders as well as the option to edit (rename or remove) each WiFi Extender.

How to access advanced settings

To access Advanced Settings:

1. Select WiFi (from the bottom navigation on the Xfinity app).
2. Select View WiFi equipment.
3. Scroll down to select Advanced Settings.

Advanced Setting	Details
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi	Allows you to customize the mode and channel of your home network's two radio bands. If the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi settings aren't available under Advanced Settings, that means either: There are Xfinity WiFi Extenders on your network. Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi settings (e.g, WiFi Mode, Channel and Channel Width) are being managed automatically on your network to provide the best coverage.
Port Forwarding	Commonly used for: Online gaming VoIP Peer-to-peer applications Allows you to direct incoming internet traffic to a specified device connected to your home network. Guided setup provides: A list of the devices connected to your home network. A suggested list of preset configurations for common applications for ease of use. Notes: Customers with Xfinity Gateways can only set up and adjust Port Forwarding settings using the Xfinity app. They won't be able to set up and adjust Port Forwarding settings through the gateway Admin Tool.
LAN & WAN	Customize your local area network (LAN) settings. View your wide area network (WAN) IP address.
DNS Server	View the domain name system (DNS) configuration for your home network.
DMZ	Enable a demilitarized zone (DMZ) for a specified device to help resolve communication issues with an online application. Enabling a DMZ poses a security risk and should be used with caution. Consider adjusting port forward settings instead.
Data Usage	View a monthly summary of your Xfinity data usage.
Xfinity WiFi hotspot network	Enable or disable the Xfinity WiFi hotspot on your gateway.

Note: Advanced Security must be activated through the Xfinity app.
