Device Connection Test – FAQs

The Device Connection Test gives you the ability to test the connection strength of any device connected to your xFi Gateway. You can refer to the Full Network FAQs to test speed to the entire network. To learn more, check out these FAQs below.

FAQs

Can I test speeds to WiFi devices that don't have web browsers (e.g., thermostats and printers)?
The Device Connection Test gives you the ability to test the connection strength of any device connected to your xFi Gateway. However, the Device Connection Test does not provide a numerical speed test result. Instead, the results will show the activities that can be supported by your WiFi signal.

Who can use the Device Connection Test?
The Device Connection Test is currently available to some Xfinity Internet customers with an xFi Gateway. To see if the Device Connection Test is available to you, go to the Xfinity app, select WiFi, then View WiFi equipment and Internet Health. If you see a Full Network Test tile or the option to Select a Device to Test (with a list of all your connected devices), then you can check if your device connections are healthy.

Additionally, if notifications are enabled, you might receive a notification that contains a link to check a device’s connection health using the Device Connection Test.

Notes:

  • The Device Connection Test is available in the Xfinity app to all Xfinity Internet customers with xFi Gateways except the DPC3939 and PX5001 models (which are not compatible with the Device Connection Test).
  • If this feature is not available to you, you can use the Troubleshoot Device option in the Xfinity app to check the device connection.
    • Log in to the Xfinity app.
    • Select View WiFi equipment from the WiFi tab.
    • Select your Network name.
    • Select Gateway.
    • Scroll down to the Device Information section and select Troubleshoot Device.

What do my device connection results mean?
The connection strength to operate a WiFi device varies depending on the type of device.

For example, since a printer requires a much lower connection strength than a smart phone to properly operate, your printer is only checked for basic connectivity.

Your smart phone, however, is checked for:

  • Web browsing.
  • Streaming HD.
  • Streaming 4K.
  • Video chatting.
  • Gaming.
  • Fast downloads.

If there's a green check mark next to all the activities listed in the results, then your device connection is adequate for that device type. However, if there's a red X next to any of the activities in your results, then your device connection can't support those activities and the connection could be improved.

How do I improve my device connections?
If one or more of your device activities aren't supported by your WiFi signal, you can select Help Me Improve to browse tips to improve your connection strength.

All my device activities are supported by my WiFi signal, but I’m still having issues with my device connection. How do I fix it?
If all your device activities are supported by your WiFi signal (green check marks next to all the activities), but you’re still having issues with that device, you can select Still Having Issues? to browse tips to help you resolve your issues.
