If you rent an xFi Gateway, the Xfinity app allows you to control, manage and secure your Xfinity Internet service and connected devices. You can also use the Xfinity app to check on your whole home network health and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
The Xfinity xFi Internet Health features make it easy to check on your whole home network including the speed of the Xfinity Internet to your xFi Gateway and the connection strength of your connected devices. The tests determine if your home is getting healthy internet speeds and the types of activities your WiFi signal can support.
How to perform a full network test
- Sign in to the Xfinity app with your Xfinity ID and password.
- Select WiFi from the bottom of the app.
- Select Run a test.
- On the Full Network Test tile, select Run a Test.
- You can also get to this section by selecting View WiFi equipment from the WiFi tab. Then, select Internet Health.
Note: xFi customers that don't see the Full Network Test tile on Internet Health will instead see the Speed to Gateway tile or Speed to Device tile.
The full network test begins by checking for service outages. If there are no outages in the area, speed to Gateway is tested next. Speed to Gateway results are represented in percentages (of plan speed). Your network connection is functioning properly if the Speed to Gateway results are higher than 90% of the speeds included with your Xfinity Internet plan.
If your speed test results are lower than 90% of the speeds included with your Xfinity Internet plan, the test will end, and you’ll be presented with one of two options.
- Gateway Upgrade: If the Speed to Gateway test determines that your gateway isn't able to match your Xfinity Internet plan, we’ll provide a new one at no additional cost.
- Gateway Restart: If the Speed to Gateway test determines your gateway is compatible with your Xfinity Internet plan, you’ll be prompted to restart the gateway to help resolve any issues, after which the test will run again automatically.
- If your speeds are still low after the second test, we’ll need to schedule a technician visit to your home.
Device connection results
The device connection test results and list of activities vary depending on the type of device you’re checking. For example, since the connection strength required to properly operate a printer is much lower than the connection strength required for a smart phone, your printer is only checked for basic connectivity, whereas your smart phone is checked for web browsing, streaming HD, streaming 4K, video chatting, gaming and fast downloads.
If all your device activities are supported by your WiFi signal (you'll see green check marks next to all the activities), but you’re still having issues with that device, you can select Still Having Issues? to browse helpful tips, such as checking for website issues, restarting your device and restarting the app or browser.
If one or more of your device activities aren't supported by your WiFi signal, you can select Help Me Improve to browse tips to improve your connection strength. Tips include moving closer to your gateway, clearing space around it, avoiding interference, restarting your device, restarting and relocating your gateway.
If your connected device is in power save mode, you'll be taken to try the test again.
How to test a single device
Using the Xfinity app (available to download on Apple App Store or Google Play), you can select WiFi, then select Run a test, and then scroll down to the list of connected devices. Choose the device you wish to check to start the test. The results for single device connection tests are similar to the results presented in the Device Connection Results (see section above) of the full network test.
Note: xFi customers that don't see the list of connected devices on Internet Health will instead see the Speed to Device tile. Speed to Device allows you to test speeds to the desktop or handheld device you’re using to access the Xfinity app. Speed to Device can't test the connection of other devices that are connected to your home network.
